A beautifully preserved example of Queen Cutlery craftsmanship, this 1978 “Plainsman” folding knife (model 1480) features a single blade made of polished 440 stainless steel and elegantly curved handles of genuine horn—a material prized for its organic beauty and feel in hand. Unlike Delrin or synthetic materials, this horn handle shows natural marbling and depth, now brought to life with a gentle polish.
The blade is etched with:
THE PLAINSMAN – Queen – 1480 – 440 Stainless
The tang is stamped with the Queen crown logo and the 1978 date code (Q over 18). This model was made in Titusville, Pennsylvania, back when Queen was turning out hardworking knives built for a lifetime of use.

Historical Note:
Queen Cutlery, founded in 1922 and located in Titusville, PA, was once considered one of the finest traditional knife makers in America. The "Plainsman" was a mid-size working folder designed for the outdoorsman, made at a time when Queen still relied on hand-fit construction. The 440 stainless steel and genuine horn handle on this piece place it a step above the standard Delrin-handled variants. In the 1970s, Queen was known for using premium materials in smaller production runs, making these knives increasingly collectible today.
Condition Note:
This knife is in excellent vintage condition. Blade appears unused with a clean edge and legible etching. Handle has been gently polished to bring out the natural luster of the horn. Light signs of age and storage may be present, including patina on brass hardware.
Collector's Note:
This is a rare opportunity to own a Queen “Plainsman” with natural horn handles—something not commonly seen on this model. A wonderful piece for collectors of traditional American knives or fans of Queen Cutlery’s golden era.
