Vintage Aerial & ACMCo “Girlie” Picture Knife – Pin-Up Celluloid Handles – Circa 1930s–40s – USA Made

$38.00

Shipping to United States: $6.95

A striking and rare vintage example of Americana novelty cutlery, this two-blade pen knife features alternating pin-up “girlie” images beneath a clear celluloid wrap handle. The knife is double-marked: one blade is stamped “Aerial Cut. Mfg. Co. Marinette Wis”, and the other “A.CM.C.O. Marinette Wis” — referencing Aerial’s post-acquisition branding under the Simmons Hardware Co., which acquired Aerial in the early 1930s. These knives were marketed toward soldiers and blue-collar workers alike, with risqué photo imagery inspired by pin-up calendars of the era.

Specifications:

Closed length: Approx. 3.25"

Blades: 2 (spear point and pen blade)

Handle: Clear celluloid over pin-up girl photo panels

Bolsters: Nickel silver

Blades: Carbon steel

Condition:

One blade does not fully close into the channel (see photos) — it can be manually pushed in, suggesting a once-functioning lock or tension mechanism is no longer engaging. Snap is poor or non-existent on both blades, but no wobble noted.

Handles show light wear but are intact, with vivid and complete photo inlays.

This knife ships wrapped in acid-free archival tissue to help preserve both the blade and handle during transit and storage.

Historical Note:
The Aerial Cutlery Company of Marinette, Wisconsin, was known for producing knives of reliable quality from the early 1900s until its acquisition by Simmons Hardware in the 1930s. These novelty “girlie” knives became popular around the WWII era and were often sold at hardware stores and novelty stands, making them nostalgic pieces of 20th-century working-class culture.

Collector’s Note:
An eye-catching addition to any vintage knife, militaria, or Americana collection — this piece blends cutlery craft with early 20th-century novelty culture. These celluloid photo knives continue to grow in appeal among collectors of both knives and kitsch.
