This rare vintage pen knife by W.R. Case & Sons dates back to the 1920s–1940s and features the vibrant, unmistakable “Christmas Tree” celluloid handles—an era-defining style swirled with metallic gold, red, green, and black that shimmer beneath a clear protective coating. This festive material, used by Case and a few others during the early 20th century, has become highly collectible for its bold character and scarcity.
Outfitted with two carbon steel blades—a pen and coping/small pen—this slim little folder is surprisingly tight for its age. While both blades show notable patina and surface pitting, the walk and talk remain strong. There’s no blade wobble, and the snap on both open and close is crisp.
Tang is stamped:
CASE TESTED XX
(indicating manufacture between 1920–1940)

📜 Historical Note:
The “Christmas Tree” celluloid was part of the decorative innovation wave during the early 20th century. Used for only a brief period, these handles fused color, sparkle, and novelty—making them a standout among the sea of traditional bone and wood knives. Case’s “Tested XX” tang stamp was used between 1920 and 1940, a golden age for American cutlery manufacturing.
🧲 Collector’s Note:
Knives from the Case Tested era are among the most revered by collectors. This piece pairs that iconic era with the seldom-seen Christmas Tree handles and working mechanics. It’s a compact conversation starter—ideal for collectors of early Case knives, holiday-themed rarities, or vintage Americana.
