Vintage Sabre Japan Barlow Pocket Knife – Mid-Century Era – Two-Blade Folding Knife with Striated Synthetic Handles

$24.00

Shipping to United States: $6.95

This Sabre Japan Barlow knife is a mid-century working-class classic, echoing the postwar boom in affordable, reliable pocket tools. With its long bolster proudly etched “BARLOW” and model “603” tang stamp, it hails from Japan’s prolific cutlery export era—when brands like Sabre provided millions of knives to American households, tackle boxes, and workbenches.

The knife features two carbon steel blades—a robust clip point and a smaller pen blade—both still sporting good snap and clean edges. The handles are deep brown synthetic with a diagonal jig pattern, attached with brass pins and backed with steel liners. While the two sides of the handle show some variation in tone, this kind of color inconsistency is a known trait of molded synthetic materials from the period and adds visual charm rather than detracts.

Measuring approx. 3 3/8" closed, it’s pocket-friendly, practical, and surprisingly sturdy.

📜 Historical Note:
Sabre was one of the prominent Japanese export cutlery brands from the 1950s through the 1980s, often distributed through American hardware stores, mail-order catalogs, and five-and-dimes. The “Barlow” style—with its elongated bolster and sturdy frame—has been a staple among working-class Americans since the 1700s, and this mid-century example carried that torch into the modern era.

🧷 Collector’s Note:
Affordable, honest, and well-made, this Sabre Barlow represents a great entry point into knife collecting. It’s a solid piece of Cold War-era manufacturing history with enough character to stand out in any display, and enough reliability to still ride in your pocket.
