This small yet striking Imperial Providence RI equal-end stockman dates to the late 1930s through early 1950s—a fine example of pre–Stainless Era American pocket cutlery. Measuring just 2¼ inches closed, it carries three near-full carbon steel blades: clip, pen, and sheepsfoot. Each opens smoothly with good snap and rests tightly in the frame. The handles are a lustrous root beer celluloid with deep, marbled character, capped in nickel silver bolsters with brass liners. Compact, bright, and brimming with mid-century charm, it’s a piece of cutlery history that feels equally at home in a pocket or display case.

📜 Historical Note:
Produced between 1936 and 1952, this knife represents Imperial’s early celluloid period—when the company led the market in affordable yet visually expressive pocketknives. The “Imperial Prov. RI” tang stamp was used during this pre-Duraflex era, a time when cutlery blended artistry with utility in compact, everyday forms.
🧲 Collector’s Note:
These early Imperials capture the spirit of Depression- and postwar-era craftsmanship. Their root beer or pearlized celluloid handles were small works of art in themselves—functional jewelry for the working man’s pocket. This example’s tight build and shimmering finish make it a rewarding find for collectors of early American celluloid knives.
