This vintage commemorative pocket knife was produced by A & A Mfg. Co. in Solingen, Germany, during the late pre-war to immediate post-war export period. Compact yet richly detailed, the knife features ornate cast metal handles depicting historic American landmarks, including the Jenny Wade House, Gen. Meade’s Headquarters, and the Pennsylvania State Memorial—a striking blend of German craftsmanship and American historical remembrance.
Despite its small size, this knife is mechanically excellent. Both blades remain tight with strong forward and back snap, and the overall fit and finish reflect the higher production standards associated with Solingen exports from this era.

Historical Note
Before and immediately after World War II, Solingen makers produced commemorative knives for the American market using established tooling and export channels. Knives stamped simply “Germany”—rather than “West Germany”—are generally associated with production prior to 1949. Scenic souvenir knives from this period often commemorated Civil War landmarks and memorials, serving as keepsakes that blended European cutlery traditions with American historical themes.
Collector’s Note
Pre–West Germany Solingen commemorative knives are increasingly appreciated for their engraved artistry, solid mechanics, and historical crossover appeal. The sharp relief detail and unusually strong snap on this example make it a particularly attractive piece for collectors of souvenir knives, Civil War memorabilia, or German imports.
