Compact and practical, this small single-blade knife was designed as a simple everyday tool while also serving as a cheerful reminder of the values taught within the Girl Scouts program.

The knife features bright red celluloid handles with gold graphics displaying the Brownie name and iconic fairy figures, while the reverse side carries the playful safety reminder: “Be wise, Beware, Use me with care.” A small lanyard ring at the end of the frame allowed the knife to be attached to a keychain, belt loop, or scouting kit.

📜 Historical Note

The Brownies are the youngest division of the Girl Scouts, introduced in the early 20th century as a way to teach younger girls the values of community service, preparedness, and outdoor skills. Throughout the mid-1900s, small pocket knives like this were commonly marketed to youth organizations as practical tools for simple tasks during camping and scouting activities.

Kutmaster of Utica, New York—one of the many historic cutlery makers in that city—produced a wide variety of advertising knives during this era, many featuring colorful celluloid handles and promotional graphics.

Girl Scouts and Brownie knives have become increasingly collectible due to their bright graphics, nostalgic appeal, and connection to American youth history. Examples with clear graphics and intact hardware—like this one—make wonderful additions to both vintage knife collections and scouting memorabilia displays.

Its compact size, charming design, and classic American manufacture make it a standout little piece of mid-century history.
